Taekwon-do Weapons Weapons Training is suspended for the summer Holidays and will resume on Saturday 4th September 2010
Taekwon-do weapons training is based around traditional Taekwon-do training incorporating patterns, pre-arranged and sparring. Developed by Mr Bradshaw this adds another dimension to your TKD training regime. Training is available in most weaponry including Bo-Staff, Nunchaku, Tonfa, Knives, Broadsword, Sai, Kama and Katana.
Martial Arts evolved out of a need to defend family and home land. In many circumstances the lower classes were forbidden to carry arms and as such they evolved fighting systems using everyday implements such as Scythes, Rice Flails, etc. The Nunchaku were developed from rice flails, Tonfa evolved from a handle used on millstones and Kama were used for harvesting works. Other weaponry is far more familiar, the Katana for instance being the chosen weapon of the Samurai.
As Taekwon-do weapons training is based around traditional Taekwon-do patterns anyone wishing to develop this aspect of their training needs to hold a Green Belt in Taekwon-do as a minimum.
Students select 3 weapons to train with and will learn to perform their patterns incorporating the weapons into their blocks and attacks. Students grade on the 3 weapons selected and will perform 2 patterns for each weapon at each grading. If successful they will be awarded a full colour belt. Where a student only grades on 2 or less weapons or performs only one pattern they will be awarded a tag belt.
Pre-arranged sparring also forms a part of the training program and is similar to the TKD Pre-arranged sparring.
A recent addition to the training regime is Spartan combat sparring during which both opponents are required to wear appropriate protective equipment. This is demonstrated on the left hand side of the page. This protective equipment allows the opponents to practice techniques which would not be possible without protective equipment. As with all Taekwon-do training these sessions are always fully supervised to ensure the safety of the students
